A PRESENT FOR LIZ & OREN
Sabich is a savory meal that’s very popular in Israel. A pita bread is filled with fried eggplant, humus, hard-boiled egg, Israeli salad, then topped with tahini and amba (sesame seed paste and mango pickle salad dressings).
Liz and Oren are a very friendly couple who have a small sabich business in Pardes Hanna Karkur, central Israel.
Oren always takes great care to fill the pita with your choice of ingredients until it almost bursts, while Liz works in the kitchen. Their sabich is very good but their premises are not in a prime location and does not have much passing trade. They work hard but always create a vibrant, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It’s always a pleasure to visit them.
My daughter, Donna, loves sabich and is a regular customer. Recently she heard that they had to move – their premises were going to be leased to a new business. Before moving they gave us two of the rustic, hand-made chairs and a table from their outdoor eating area that we love.
We were sad that this small oasis of sabich and friendliness was going to be lost, but Liz and Oren were looking forward to moving into the town center where they would have lots more customers to enjoy their sabich.
We wanted to give something in return, so I made a small sculptural plaque to wish them success and prosperity in their new location. I’m a photographer and digital retoucher but my first love is Art. I’m naturally creative and making this plaque for them was a lot of fun…
Translation: Wishing you Peace, Health, Success, and Sabich.
18th May 2025…
They have now moved to the town center. We visited them while they were busy decorating their new premises – I’m happy to say they’ve recreated their warm and friendly atmosphere in the new “Sabich Shel Oren”.
I was very happy to present Liz and Oren with our little token of appreciation. Good people and good sabich are a winning combination. We wish them every success.
